Campaign Magazine, the influential marketing trade publication, has named Ogilvy & Mather runner up Network of the Year, in a closely contested competition.

The judges praised O&M’s investment in creative talent, which resulted in a hugely successful year at Cannes Lions 2011, the 100th anniversary of founder David Ogilvy’s birth, winning 12 golds, 17 silvers and 32 bronze lions.

The judges also noted the many pivotal hires the agency has made this year, primarily on the creative front including Gerry Human in Ogilvy & Mather UK, John Jakubowski in the Asia-Pacific region, Ivan Gonzales in Ogilvy Mexico, Alfonso Marian in OgilvyOne New York and Graham Fink in Ogilvy China.

Campaign Magazine also cited the agency’s continued ambition in Asian markets, noting its footprint in emerging markets with 4,000 staff working in China alone, spread across 17 offices, and as a market leader in India. The client list in this region includes Kraft, BP, Motorola and more recently Google.

Other notable new-business wins in 2011 included Grant Thornton (global), Gap (US), Europcar and Diageo (pan-Europe), and Coca- Cola (Latin America).

The agency also picked up two of the biggest global pitches of 2011 winning the SC Johnson mandate and Philips.

All in all, a great end to 2011 and promising start to 2012.

• Event explores where brands, advertising and music collide

• Tribes, The Delays, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Alexis Ffrench, and Kidda confirmed to perform alongside a ‘special guest’

• Watch the event live from 1pm on 9th September on labdaylive.co.uk and follow @OgilvyLondon #labdaylive to join in the conversation

Ogilvy Group UK is set to host ‘Lab Day LIVE’, a unique event that will combine a conference, entitled ‘Making music matter as much to brands as it does to consumers’ with a 3-stage, live music festival.

This is a benchmark event for Ogilvy in that it will be the first London agency to provide a forum that will engage both the advertising and music communities. This is part of Ogilvy’s on-going drive to help clients and their brands navigate the rapidly changing landscape of the music industry in the digital age.

An extension of Ogilvy’s Ogroovy music initiative, Lab Day LIVE will invite members of the music industry to present their ideas and products to Ogilvy clients and employees.

Says Hugh Baillie, CEO, Ogilvy & Mather; “‘This event aims to capture the dynamism and energy of the music and ad industries and provide a collaborative environment where each can learn from the other.”

Says Annette King, CEO, OgilvyOne; “There is so much we can do with music today, across all channels. Our goal is to open people’s minds to what’s possible, whatever discipline they work in.”

Taking place on 9 September, Lab Day LIVE will be split into two distinct sections. The morning conference will see music luminaries from organisations including PRS, Spotify and Warner Music discuss the raft of new opportunities available to brands.

In the afternoon, the agency will move into festival mode as its London offices are taken over by three stages of live music, in partnership with music publishers and licensers, Cord, Imagem and Felt Music respectively.

Incorporating talent from across the hip-hop to classical genres, Tribes, The Delays, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Alexis Ffrench and Kidda, will be concurrently streamed live online.

Says Nicole Yershon, Director of Innovative Solutions, Ogilvy Group UK,
‘Music is a beautiful mechanic for brands to engage their audience with and we’re now in an age where it’s potentially as effective an engagement tool as social media. It’s critically important we shine a light on this; the digital lab’s Lab Day LIVE is a perfect way to do this. It’s never been more relevant for our client brands.’

Areas of discussion at the conference include – how sound affects the human being in four distinct ways; how music affects all groups of people, regardless of age and gender; how music can be used to target an audience across all communication platforms; in-depth analysis of the types of music specific demographics are listening to; new technologies by which consumers can interact with music and training on how to navigate music rights.

The event will have a festival ambience with the office canteen serving food and beverages from stalls, and housing an eclectic array of exhibitors displaying their wares. Clients, artists and delegates will receive wristbands and food and drink tokens upon arrival at the event.

Former member of Human League and CEO of Illustrious and Sonic ID, Martyn Ware adds, ‘This is a fantastic event to be involved with; it’s really important that the ad industry taps into the potential music can offer to its brands – and of course I’m looking forward to watching the stellar line-up.’

Ogilvy & Mather has created an autumn campaign for Kodak called “beautifully cheap printing” to promote its Hero series of printers. The ‘Beautifully Cheap printing’ campaign is composed of 20′ and 30′ TV spots with a 50′ second film airing online.

The TVC features two young football fans who recreate a football stadium in their back garden by printing out multiple images of a crowd on the terraces as seen from the pitch on sheets of A4 paper. They then use the printouts to cover the fences, bushes and garden furniture around them.

Hugh Baillie, CEO, Ogilvy & Mather said: “There’s a charm and humanity in Kodak’s DNA which is abundantly realised in Kevin’s film. For most people, a home printer is a box that whirrs and clicks with anonymous but pricey invisibility. Kodak has turned the category on its head with ink prices that put printing firmly back in reach of all. Both technically and emotionally, it’s the best placed brand to do this.”
