Today (23rd September) it’s 60 years to the day since the late great David Ogilvy set up his agency in New York with very little money and no clients and a great deal of ambition and vision. Within a decade he’d built one of the greatest and most famous agencies in the world.
As part of the ongoing celebrations, two of our Summer School placements, Emma and George, created a short film which will be broadcast to all the other Ogilvy offices around the world.

Later this month, we celebrate our 60th anniversary: it was on 23rd September 1948 that David Ogilvy and two partners set up Ogilvy & Mather in New York.
David had no clients but did possess energy, vision and a capacity for hard work and innovation; within a decade he had built up one of the world’s largest and most creative agencies.
This short film (made by what was then known as O&M London in 2006) explains how he did it. You’ll see some of our most iconic campaigns, but you’ll also learn that the roots of the agency stretch back to 1906 and even further!
“Encourage innovation. Change is our lifeblood, stagnation our death knell.” - David Ogilvy
Ogilvy, the “agency most valued by those who most value brands”, today celebrates its 60th anniversary with a rolling global virtual party.
Uniting Ogilvy’s 15,000 employees across the planet, the anniversary celebrated creativity and big brand ideas, the foundation of our agency’s culture.
David Ogilvy founded Ogilvy in New York on September 23rd, 1948 – 60 years ago today. Speaking about the creation of the agency, Shelly Lazarus, the New York-based Chairman & CEO of Ogilvy & Mather worldwide, says:
“Little did David know back then that he was creating a culture and a philosophy that would transform our industry, and live on and flourish to this day. David’s viewpoints on the importance of brands and the power of big ideas and creativity are as relevant today as they were when he came up with them . . . and perhaps even more so. And for the next 60 years, we will continue in that tradition.”
Over 30 offices throughout the Ogilvy network, from Auckland to San Francisco (and including London, of course) are holding a 60th anniversary celebration, commemorating David’s legacy and the culture he created.
The festivities are being webcast on our intranet system Truffles using a new, open source platform.
Ogilvy Group UK’s vice-chairman and executive creative director Rory Sutherland offers his unique brand of birthday greetings to the Ogilvy global family…
David Ogilvy was a man ahead of his time and his blueprints for successful advertising and marketing still hold true today - and those “Ogilvyisms” are likely to still hold water 60 decades hence.
So says Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP (which famously bought the Ogilvy network in 1989). Here Sir Martin remembers David Ogilvy and his works, looks back on the last two decades, and offers some pointers for the direction the agency might take in the next 60 years.
On the occasion of our 60th birthday, Mike Walsh, who was chairman and CEO of Ogilvy in Europe until 1995, remembers working (and lunching) with the great David Ogilvy.
