A shocking real life horror film created by Ogilvy & Mather London for Shark conservation charity, Bite-Back, exposes the gory truth about the shark fishing industry and the controversial practice of ‘finning’ live sharks at sea. Set to a haunting soundtrack, the 45-second black and white commercial, has been created to lift the lid on the cruel and barbaric practice that contributes to the death of more than 36 million sharks every year. Deemed too graphic for television, the film has been given an 18-certificate cinema rating, and can be viewed on www.bite-back.com.

The boom in demand for shark fin soup is blamed for the rapid rise in the numbers of sharks being hunted. Once the reserve of Chinese Emperors, shark fin soup is now consumed around the world. With a market value of around USD$ 700 per kilo, shark fins have become one of the most lucrative seafood items in the world. As a result, fins are systematically sliced off living sharks before their carcasses are dumped overboard. Unable to swim, the sharks endure a slow death on the sea floor. The bodies, worth less at market than fins, are discarded because they can contaminate other catches and take up valuable space in the hold.

So far the charity has enrolled the support of Gordon Ramsay, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Bear Grylls, Martin Clunes, Monty Halls and Ben Fogle.

Dove wants to inspire all women to reach their full beauty potential, and is committed to creating a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. A global study found that 80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful, but do not see their own beauty.

With that in mind, Ogilvy & Mather London has created a series of print ads for the Dove Brand, aiming to put forward the brand point of view regarding the representation of beauty and more specifically the use of digital re-touching to create false representation of reality.

The ‘upside/down’ campaign shows an upside down image of a woman: from that perspective, the image appears normal and expected; but rotating the image reveals that it has been retouched and looks distorted and unreal. The creative shows quite dramatically how extreme re-touching of images can go unnoticed and how it can distort a woman’s perception of beauty.

Fernando Machado, Unilever’s Global Brand Development Vice-President for Dove Skin commented: “On Dove, we are proud to celebrate real beauty. Our brand is famous for realistically portraying women in our campaigns and for not retouching them so they look impossibly perfect. The Upside Down campaign expresses our point of view in a very creative and arresting way”.

Gerry Human, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy & Mather London commented: “In this topsy turvy world, a simple idea like running an ad upside down in the papers still grabs people’s attention. But it’s a surprise trick of the mind that really captures the imagination and drives Dove’s brand mission at the same time.”

To date, the campaign has run in Canada with possible roll out in other markets to follow.

TK Maxx has appointed Ogilvy & Mather UK as its sole digital creative agency working across social, mobile, content and in-store activation. The win follows a four-way pitch against pure play digital agencies.

O&M UK will be tasked with amplifying TK Maxx’s Spring/Summer TV campaign by creating shareable content through the use of digital channels, and developing new ways to engage in social media.

The pitch was lead by Mark Lainas, who was recently appointed Head of Digital at Ogilvy & Mather UK: “We are really excited to have TK Maxx on our client list. It is a unique and exciting business that understands the important role of digital in marketing communications. This win comes shortly after launching our two network practices, Digital@Ogilvy and Social@Ogilvy, and demonstrates our robust strength and capabilities in these disciplines.”
